Sergio Ramos made the starting line-up for Spain when they won Euro 2008 and 2012, as well as the 2010 World Cup, and has made 445 appearances for Spanish giants Real Madrid, since he joined from Sevilla in 2005. The experience and success the 29-year-old has under his belt would make him a solid candidate for United’s defensive reinforcements. Van Gaal is eager to push for the move, and allegedly will only let goalkeeper David De Gea go to Real if Ramos is part of the deal.

Manchester United are ready to spend big again this summer, as Louis van Gaal seeks to build a new spine for a team fans are hoping will challenge for the Premier League title once again.

With David de Gea potentially signing for Real Madrid, Radamel Falcao on his way to Chelsea and Michael Carrick entering the twilight years of his career, United's Dutch manager has plenty of squad issues to address.

But the club's return to the Champions League (qualifiers) and an increase in Premier League TV revenue will boost Van Gaal's transfer kitty, with another £150m splurge rumoured to be in the offing.

He’s been instrumental in Bayern Munich’s side, and won his eighth league title with the side in May. Schweinsteiger also lifted the world cup last year, and the Champions League trophy in 2013 - so Louis van Gal is undoubtably interested in signing the star midfielder, especially at the quoted £7.5m price tag that’s around his neck along with all his silverware.

Holland’s number one when Van Gaal held the reins of the Dutch national team, Jasper Cillessen, has emerged as the most likely shot-stopper to step in for David de Gea – who is set to leave for Real Madrid this summer. His current club, Ajax, value him at close to £18m, which shouldn't be a problem for the Red Devils should they get a good fee for De Gea.

Another star that’s rumoured to be a makeweight in Real’s scramble for Manchester United’s shot stopper, De Gea, is Karim Benzema. Following the departure of Radamel Falco, United and Van Gaal are looking to recruit a new, proven goal scorer to lead their front-line and the French international is an obvious choice. The 27-year-old has now established himself as one of the world’s best forwards, and the lethal finisher could prove to be the 20-goal-a-season frontman that United lacked in their last campaign.
