Mentally and emotionally, Chelsea appeared to be in a ‘good place’ this summer. After that nice league title success last season, it seemed the club had put the unhealthy excesses of the past - you know the ones: £50m on Torres, £30m on Shevchenko - behind them and become a reformed, almost respectable character.

While the other clubs were getting off their heads on multi-million pound signings, Chelsea would smile demurely and say, “Just an £8m Asmir Begovic is fine for me, thanks.”

But just one weekend of getting smashed by Manchester City has sent the Blues tumbling off the wagon in spectacular, ugly fashion. And now Jose Mourinho has got the taste for a bit of comforting retail therapy, he can’t stop.

With Pedro and Baba Rahman already signed this week, the Chelsea boss is now set to splash out a further £100m on Paul Pogba and John Stones, according to the Daily Star.

The Juventus and France superstar would set Roman Abramovich back £60m, while the Blues are prepared to fork out for £40m for Stones, says the tabloid.

The Stones transfer should run more smoothly once the Everton defender makes a transfer request, which the Sun have predicted he will “slap in” any minute now.

The hot football transfer gossip for Manchester United fans is not nearly so exciting, with the Sun claiming that David de Gea could still sign for Real Madrid this month if the player’s agent gets his way. Being offered in part-exchange, according to the Daily Mail, is Real keeper Keylor Navas.

The Red Devils also remain keen on Southampton’s Sadio Mane, who the Telegraph says will be the subject of a £20m-plus bid from Old Trafford before the transfer window closes - preferably about three minutes before if they want to avoid being gazumped by Chelsea.

Everton are preparing for the departure of Stones by targeting Bayern Munch’s Brazilian centre-back Dante, reports German paper Bild.

Aston Villa have told Charles N'Zogbia, Kieran Richardson and Philippe Senderos they can leave the club, reports the Express and Star, although one fears Tim Sherwood may need to hire a pretty hot sales team to make that happen.

Meanwhile, Sunderland are interested in once-brilliant Brazilian forward Alexandre Pato, Liverpool’s Lucas is on his way to Besiktas and Yannick Bolasie is stalling on a new deal at Crystal Palace.

Finally, Southampton legend Francis Benali is “concerned” because he thinks Victor Wanyama may leave the club, so if you’re in the area please go and give him a hug and tell him everything will be all right. Cheers.
