The Late Gossip

UNITED IN FOR GAITAN
Intersting story in The Sunday Telegraph this morning, about Manchester United's search for a new midfielder.
The paper reports that not only have United found themselves a player, but they have agreed a deal to take him to Old Trafford.
The man in question is Nicolas Gaitan, a Benfica playmaker, and the paper claims United have agreed a £29.3million deal to sign him next summer.
The paper reports: 'As revealed by Telegraph Sport in October, United's European scouting team has monitored the 23-year-old's performances in recent months, with the player under detailed scrutiny during last month's games against Naval and Sporting Lisbon, and the club moved to head off growing interest in Gaitán from Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain by opening negotiations with Benfica in late November.
'With Gaitán's former club, Boca Juniors, entitled to 20 per cent of any transfer fee Benfica receive, the Portuguese club had been holding out for the player's full £38m release clause, written into his renegotiated contract two months ago. United made it clear they would not meet that figure, and an outline agreement is now in place for a move next June.'
Interesting. We're not sure how a player that attacking will fit into United's midfielder, but who are we to pre-judge Fergie, eh?

LIVERPOOL AFTER OZIL
Balls out bullsh*t in The People, who claim that Liverpool are keen on Mesut Ozil.
'But he plays for Real Madrid - why would he possibly go to Liverpool?' you cry.
Well, Ozil actually has been in and out of the Real team recently, with The People describing the German as 'inconsistent.'
Apparently Jose Mourinho has told Ozil that unless he shapes up he'll be out on his arse next summer, and that's where Liverpool come in.
The paper claims: 'Damien Comolli will keep an eye on developments and if Real signal they are willing to sell, then the Reds' director of football will propose a deal.
'Liverpool's hand will be stronger if they qualify for the Champions League, although failure would not rule them out of the running for the 23-year-old.'
Interesting.

AND TIOTE TOO...
Interestingly, The Sunday Mirror also thinks Liverpool will be spending big soon - specifically, on Cheik Tiote.
The paper claims Liverpool are looking at the £25million-rated midfielder:
'Kenny Dalglish sent a scouting mission to St James' Park yesterday as the Ivorian, 25, played his first game since October 22, against Swansea.
'Chelsea are favourites to land him, but Liverpool have now entered a chase that also includes Manchester United.'

CHELSEA MISS OUT ON VARGAS
One of the hotter properties in world football at the moment is young Eduardo Vargas, a Universidad de Chile striker who was apparently wanted by Chelsea, among others.
However, he has agreed to join Napoli in January for around £11.5million.
He said: "Yes, I will be joining Napoli, a large team in Italy. I'm sure I'll do very well there. I know Cavani and Lavezzi.
"I am very happy that everything was tied-up quickly and for me to play in Italy is a dream come true."
Obviously, if 2+2=5 is your thing, you might conclude that Napoli are getting ready to sell one/any of Cavani, Lavezzi or Marek Hamsik, but we couldn't possibly comment on that. Largely because we just don't know.

CITY TO SELL TWO
Here's Roberto Mancini on flogging a couple of players we'd almost forgotten existed.
He told The Mail on Sunday: "If we take a player from another club, we pay a lot of money, yet other clubs want to take players from us on loan. It is not correct.
"Onuoha and Bridge are good players and I hope we can find a good solution for them in January.
"I hope for them that they can find good clubs who will pay for their value and they can continue to play football."
