United manager Ferguson sets sights on Switzerland’s answer to Messi

Manchester United have joined Liverpool in the race to sign FC Basle star Xherdan Shaqiri.
Sir Alex Ferguson was impressed with the midfielder who starred in the Swiss side's 2-1 win over United in December, and the Old Trafford chief could be tempted into making a £10million offer when the transfer window re-opens next month.

Shaqiri, 20, has been likened to Barcelona star Lionel Messi, and is considered among Europe's brightest prospects. He can operate on either flank and has bagged eight goals this term.

The Kosovo-born midfielder also scored against England in Switzerland's 3-1 defeat last year.
According to the Daily Star, Liverpool have been monitoring Shaqiri for over 18 months with director of football Damien Comolli watching him on several occasions.
But United could make the first move with Fergie keen to bolster his midfield options following the injury blow to Darren Fletcher and with Anderson sidelined until February.
