Why has Honda been overlooked?

Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal have allowed Keisuke Honda to slip by.

As Keisuke Honda reportedly nears a move from CSKA Moscow to Lazio, it begs the question why, once again, he has been overlooked by clubs in England.
Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United have been linked with the Japanese star at one time or another, but all seem prepared to look on as he heads to Rome.
And, if reports are to be believed, Honda is available at a snip, with Lazio ready to spend just €14 million to bring the 25-year-old to the Stadio Olimpico.Compare this to the £35 million Liverpool spent to sign Andy Carroll or the £50 million Chelsea splurged on Fernando Torres, then the Biancocelesti have themselves quite a deal indeed.
This, of course, is not the first time Honda has evaded the clutches of one of Europe's premier clubs, having left Dutch club VVV-Venlo for CSKA in 2009, despite interest in his signature from elsewhere.
Soon after his switch to the Arena Khimki, Honda's profile increased even further as he played a starring role for Japan during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
His dazzling displays for the Blue Samurai surely left a number of managers wondering why they had not taken a gamble on Honda before he left Holland for Russia only months before.
Honda certainly impressed Arsene Wenger during the tournament, with the Arsenal boss branding the playmaker a 'genius' after he inspired Japan to a 3-1 win over Denmark.
It came as no surprise that Honda was consistently linked with a move to Arsenal for thereon in, and it seemed as though he would be an ideal fit for the Gunners.
Likewise, Honda appears to possess all the attributes to adhere to the philosophy Kenny Dalglish has adopted at Anfield, while Sir Alex Ferguson has been in the market for a creative midfielder.
But, it would seem that Honda is set to move to the Eternal City - something the big boys of the Barclays Premier League may come to regret.
