Xherdan Shaqiri puts Man Utd on alert as Galatasaray move falls through

Manchester United have been put on alert after Xherdan Shaqiri's proposed move from FC Basel to Galatasaray fell through.

The Turkish side had confirmed to the stock exchange on Monday that they had entered into negotiations with Basel over a deal for the highly-rated 20-year-old.

But it was thought that the two sides were some distance apart on the valuation of the youngster and Galatasaray confirmed:
"Negotiations with the professional football player Xherdan Shaqiri which began on the 23rd January 2012 have come to an end, we have not agreed terms with [Shaqiri] and his club F.C Basel."

Galatasary president Unal Aysal last week admitted he had failed with an initial bid worth around £11million. Basel are believed to be wanting a fee closer to £20m.

Basel sporting director George Heitz last week revealed that that Man Utd and Bayern Munich were both showing interest in his prize asset, telling reporters: "I have some astonishing offers. Other than Galatasaray, Bayern Munich and Manchester United are also interested.

"Transfers are an issue that is always full of surprises and you never know what will happen in the end. Of course you never know what might happen, I am asked about three or four of our players.

"Clubs from Germany, Britain and Eastern Europe are asking and we have had offers," he added. "But we are in the next round of the Champions League and that is our main aim at the moment."

Liverpool have also been linked with Shaqiri.
