David Moyes is desperate to bolster his midfield and is keeping close tabs on German ace Khedira.
Moyes sent United coach Phil Neville to watch Khedira in action in Madrid’s 7-3 win over Sevilla in the Bernabeu last week.
United are also monitoring Real winger Angel Di Maria, but Khedira tops their wanted list.
The champions made a late but unsuccessful enquiry for Khedira in the last transfer window.

Although United signed Marouane Fellaini from Everton on deadline day for £27m, the Belgium international has failed to make an impact.
He is also facing a wrist operation that could rule him out for two months.
Moyes knows he is short on class in midfield and is keen to strengthen.
Meanwhile Rio Ferdinand has vowed to keep proving his critics wrong by staying in the United side.

Long term back and hamstring issues have raised questions about how long the veteran can go on.
But Ferdinand, 35, said: “You go out there and play, and put yourself in the shop window and the manager will decide if you play or not.
“Obviously you want to play in every minute of every game, but at this stage of my career I know that’s not possible.
“I know the manager is going to put me in and out of the games, but I just want to be involved in as many as I can.”
