Wenger is keen to bring in another frontman after seeing Theo Walcott ruled out for six months and Nicklas Bendtner sidelined with an ankle sprain.

However, Express Sport understands Wenger's top targets will all allude the Arsenal boss, who can be consoled in the fact that Liverpool and Chelsea are facing the same problems.

Liverpool are competing with the Gunners to secure Morata on a loan deal for the rest of the season, but Real Madrid are unlikely to sanction any deal in January.

Real coach Carlo Ancelotti wants to keep Morata until the summer, with the 21-year-old viewed as back-up to Karim Benzema.

Wenger is prepared to spend big to bring in cover for Olivier Giroud, with Atletico Madrid's Costa and Bayern Munich's Mandzukic high on his shortlist.

Chelsea are also keen on Costa, while United are monitoring Mandzukic's situation.

However, any potential suitors may be forced to wait until the summer with Atletico and Bayern reluctant to sell in January.

Costa has a release clause of £32 miliion, but reports suggest that cannot be activated mid-season.

Wenger has identified Porto's Jackson Martinez as a back-up option, but his £33 m buy-out fee is also not thought to be active until the summer.
