- Brendan Rodgers is keen on signing "one or two top players" during the summer as Liverpool prepare to return to the Champions League.

"For me, it's about planning," he told the club's official website.

"We have the core of the squad now. Two years ago, when I came in, I was looking to introduce new ideas but a lot of the players weren't there because of the European Championship. That affected the start of the season. At least this summer we have the principles bedded in place and the players that come in will be the profile we want. It should be better for us this summer.

"I don't want to put a figure on how many but I would rather have one or two absolute top players than seven that might not help us.

"It's about the quality. We can't be going into the Champions League this year with doubts about players. We have to be going in knowing what the players' capacity to play is and their capabilities."

- Adam Lallana's hopes of joining Liverpool before the World Cup may rest on informing Southampton he is determined to leave St Mary's, with the two clubs yet to agree a deal for the England midfielder, according to The Guardian.

- Luis Suarez has refused to be drawn on speculation linking him with a summer move away from Liverpool, but says neither Barcelona or Real Madrid have priority over bidding for him.

- Manchester City and Arsenal are both weighing up a summer move for Angel di Maria, according to the Daily Star.

- Manchester United are lining up a summer move for Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels, according to Metro.

- Jose Mourinho is closing in on a £32m move for Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa, but the Chelsea manager will continue to look to bring in attacking reinforcements, according to the Daily Express.

- Neymar has revealed that he plans to leave Barcelona and return to boyhood club Santos at some point in the future.
