Porto’s highly-rated centre-back, Eliaquim Mangala, is set to reject interest from Manchester City in favour of a move to Chelsea as he wants to join a club who have had success in Europe.

The 23-year-old France international has also been watched by Manchester United scouts, though new manager Louis van Gaal is not interested in signing the defender as he would prefer to bring in players with more experience in that position, which has made Chelsea the favourites to sign him following the departure of David Luiz to Paris St-Germain.

Mourinho still has strong links with Porto, the club he used to manage, and is hopeful he will be able to land Mangala for less than the £35 million that has been quoted in the past.

City will turn their attention to Roma’s Mehdi Benatia if they miss out on Mangala.

Roma are trying to hold on to the Moroccan international, and have offered him a new contract in the hope of persuading him to stay in Italy. They have also told City they want £50 million for the 27-year-old.
