Manchester City believe they are close to winning the race for £55million-rated Liverpool contract rebel Raheem Sterling, writes Steve Bates in the Sunday People.

It's understood the Blues' chief executive Ferran Soriano and director of football Txiki Begiristain have identified speedy Sterling as the young star to spearhead a squad shake-up at the Etihad this summer.

The duo know they have to act fast and be ambitious with their transfer deals this summer after taking flak for a raft of mediocre signings during their spell at the club. And they are believed to be going all-out to make sure Sterling becomes a headline signing once the season finishes.

The 20-year-old England forward has been under fire for turning down the Reds' offer of a £100,000-a-week new contract. Sterling has told Kop boss Brendan Rodgers he won't discuss his future with the club until this season is over.

City believe they will get the youngster tied down quickly once the campaign ends with promises of a £165k-a-week deal, including incentives that could see him earn £200,000 a-week if the Blues win trophies, and Champions League football.

Manager Manuel Pellegrini has admitted the club will target English stars this summer - with Sterling their main priority.

And with Liverpool in disarray after a disappointing season, outgoing champions City are confident they have done enough to lure Sterling to the blue side of Manchester.
