Chelsea exploring Riyad Mahrez transfer option after missing out on Dries Mertens

Chelsea are reportedly monitoring Riyad Mahrez’s situation at Leicester City as they weigh up moving for the £50million-rated Arsenal transfer target as an alternative to Dries Mertens.

The Blues had made the Napoli forward one of their priority attacking targets for this summer before he snubbed interest from the Premier League to sign a new contract at the Stadio San Paolo.

Mahrez wasn’t at his best for the Foxes last season as they slumped to mid-table after the dizzying heights achieved in 2015/16, but the Algerian remains regarded as a top talent capable of representing a bigger club.

According to the London Evening Standard, Antonio Conte is now switching his focus to Mahrez, who has been strongly linked with Arsenal after revealing his desire to leave the King Power Stadium.

The 26-year-old has, however, also been overheard stating his admiration for Chelsea, telling Leicester team-mate Islam Slimani: ‘They’re an incredible club. A real club’ just after they won the title last month.

Chelsea mostly started with a front three of Eden Hazard, Diego Costa and Pedro last season, though the latter was regularly rotated with Willian, suggesting that Conte might see that right-hand side as a position worth strengthening.

Mahrez has performed effectively in a similar role for Leicester, cutting in from that side onto his favoured left foot and showing a real eye for goal during the Foxes’ 2015/16 title-winning campaign.
